The Palace Museum of the market town of Murnau is housed in the former "Pflegschloß" (palace) in the town centre. Ludwig the Bavarian presented this complex (built in 1232, enlarged in 1537) to Ettal Monastery in 1332. It served as a place of jurisdiction until the Secularisation. The Palace Museum elaborates the specific links between the Murnau landscape, local tradition and important art and literature history. The exhibition, therefore, focuses on the history and the characteristics of the landscape, the history and architectural history of the market town - which from 1901 was also determined by Emanuel von Seidel -, the palace history, local house business in the 18th and 19th century (verre-églomisé, feather painting, candle-making) and tourism from the mid 19th century.
Udo Dammert's verre-églomisé collection documents the large number of international centres which produced this technique from Europe to the Far East. Another focus is on landscape painting in the foothills of the Alps from the late 18th century. The decisive turn of art towards expressionism came in 1908 with the artists of the "Neue Künstlervereinigung München" and the "Blauer Reiter" in Murnau. A large section is also dedicated to Gabriele Münter's oeuvre, who lived and worked in Murnau until 1962. Another section presents the life and work of the playwright Ödön von Horváth, who spent most of the years 1924 to 1933 in Murnau where he also wrote one of his most important plays.
